CANDLES Holocaust Museum and Education Center 1532 S. 3rd Street Terre Haute, IN 47802

In April 1994, Kizito Kalima was hacked with a machete and left for dead in a pile of bodies. He was then chased, imprisoned, tortured and then, finally, found a chance to escape! The odds were slim, but it was better to be shot than slowly cut to pieces by genocidaires. Leading a few others and running as fast as his scarred teenage body could carry him, Kazito found refuge deep within the Nyanza swamps.

In July 1994, after endless days and nights with the cries of the Genocide of the Tutsi echoing all around, and as he was on the brink of starvation and madness, Rwanda was liberated. Stick-like and frightened, but not broken, Kazito emerged from the dark morass as a survivor.

Join CANDLES to hear Kizito’s story of survival and his journey from the swamps of Rwanda to the founder and director of the Peace Center for Forgiveness and Reconciliation.

Admission is free and open to the public.
